@Stablemable2
Im a guy and I saw Suckerpunch for the first time during the pandemic and ended buying it on blu ray.
This is after years of hearing some poor reviews since it was released in theaters
Its an awesome film (after seeing it a second time) and so underrated.

I would go see this flick in a theater.

I have only seen parts of this movie but from what I have seen the main protagonist represent the three parts or levels of the human mind: the Ego would be Sweet Pea, the Super Ego would be the Wiseman and the Id would be Babydoll. SP would actually be an inner adventure of the soul, a journey of the psyche, one with a happy ending despite all appearances, as the "real person", the protagonist, the Ego, has finally reached freedom after having domesticated his o her It through try and error. Her future opens up wide to her as the bus carrying her advances in.

I don't think it has anything to do with feminism, it is just is easier to represent the most sensible aspects of the mind with feminine characters and the Super Ego being represented by a male representation is more than appropriate, as he is the one with the needed experience, rationally and acquired knowledge to push the Ego to reach the best possible decision in crucial situations.

@yurp7444
Technically, she is.
She is a piece of the main character.

If something happens to Sweet Pea, then it happened to Baby Doll.

@Jamiiie715
i actually have a different view of this movie than most. a lot of people say it's sweet pea's story and that baby doll is just the imagination and angel to protect her. But i truly don't think so. i think baby doll is the real star of the show, but as she starts to go into la la land she splits herself with sweet pea and they are BOTH her. SHE - babydoll - has to fight and sacrifice herself and die - get lobotomized - so SHE - sweet pea - can vanish and have sweet dreams on the bus. going to paradise. sweet pea being free is obviously a metaphor. as the bus driver was in the imagination this whole time. she "dies" so she can be free - cause they are both her. what her true face is, i don't know. she becomes her OWN hero. when sweet pea says "i'm the star of the show" this is already in la la land - so in reality, babydoll watch HERSELF on stage as sweet pea is sitting on the stage just like the intro. she is the star and they are both her. that's how i see it. because the other two possibilities don't make TOTAL sense either way. if 1: you decide sweet pea is the real person and babydoll is just the imagination - then WHY is it babydoll at the asylum in the end being free sitting in the chair imagining herself on the bus. She literally imagines herself as sweet pea leaving to paradise FINALLY set free. which doesn't make sense, IF babydoll is the imagination. sweet pea was a real person who she helped escape - but she herself was not able to run in any other way than her mind.
2: you think baby doll is real and sweet pea is the imagination - which she kinda is... BUT if sweet pea truly was just the imagination of babydoll - as a guardian angel - then it doesn't work bc babydoll is ALWAYS the one saving the day..

i think... when you truly look at the entire dialogue of the film .... it is clear to ME, that baby doll and sweet pea are the same person. one is the coward and frightened not knowing what to do, and says it's a bad idea, let's just stay... (she also has a sister who dies - because they are the same person) whereas baby doll is the version of her who knows she has to fight. she has to surrender to getting lobotomized in order to be set free. "sweet pea" can only go to the bus to paradise - because '"babydoll" sacrifices herself with no fight in the end.

IT'S A GREAT FILM! I think Sucker Punch was ahead of its time, it was just targeted at the wrong audience during its release. If you're gonna watch it through the lens of female rage, it's brilliant and I hope it would get a Jennifer's Body treatment. Sucker Punch deserves to become a cult classic

@johngleue
Thanks for the video it was great! Made me realize something when listening to sweet pea's speech. She says the guardian angels can take the form of anyone we can imagine even demons in order to push us towards taking action. I think I'm convinced now more than ever that absolutely everything in this movie is taking place inside sweet pea's mind.

It's as if we all get a front row seat to see her introspect after enduring trauma. We get to see her view of the world as it shifts from an asylum to a brothel, in time periods when women held less agency over their lives. Symbolizing her feelings of being oppressed by the patriarchy.

The weaponization of her sexuality that brings more and more madness to her life, killing her virtues one by one. But she survives and eventually separates herself from her victimhood.

Комментарий от : @johngleue

@johngleue
The more I think about this movie the more I think it's about primacy of consciousness. The thought that reality is subjective to our arbitrary whim, and that realization saddens me because I used to think this movie was about volition and seizing control over the choices in your life in an attempt to better it, here and now, in objective reality.

But this movie seems to say reality is irrelevant, it's more about how you perceive it. How you choose to rationalize your own existence. Which, in reality, is basically giving up on ever actually KNOWING anything and puts an emphasis on the importance of internalizing and understanding how you FEEL about everything.

Primacy of existence states that reality just is. It's not dependent on our interpretation. So it doesn't do us any favors to pretend that reality is anything other than what it actually is, in a desperate attempt to better cope with it. If anything by doing that you just enable injustices like the ones in this movie to continue to happen to you.

I choose to interpret this movie as pro primacy of existence. And by doing so I'm probably refusing to see the reality which makes me a complete hypocrit. 😀

But this movie can only actually help people achieve happiness if it's not suggesting that we should live a life full of denial and reject reality. I like to think sweet pea rejects subjectivism at the end of this movie and embraces reality.

Primacy of consciousness = Man gains knowledge of reality from looking inward.

Primacy of existence = Man gains knowledge of reality from looking outward.

It was her mind trying to hang on so in the process it manifested all this stuff ain't that the very end of the movie we finally see them Hammer the ice pick or whatever into school giving her to the full procedure of the lobotomy. @cocharles563
I viewed it a little differently. In my version Baby doll is real and younger than pictured in the film. The other 5 girls were her schizophrenia same as her sister is really her violently losing her virginity to Blue. Then she fights back and blue is killed not wounded. It is the gov that puts her in the insane asylum where she creates the 5 items she needs to escape. And she conjures up an entirely new reality to acquire them. Her sex=dance=( fight) are her strugling against the streight jacket and her final escape is recieving the lobotomy. So, I'm a little confused what is the base story that all the other stories build from in you version? Does Blue exist? Is the mother dead? Was there a sister? Did blue put Sweetpea (who imagines her angel Baby doll) into an insane asylum and she then conjured in her mind the other girls including herself to help babydoll? if the boy on the bus is the same boy in her fight sequence for the map then the bus isn't real either? Was she lobotomised?
1. map= the poster that guides the lobotomy spike, 2. Fire= harsh overhead flood lights the doctors use, Or alternatively it is the shock treatment they often administered to subdue the patient. 3 knife= the spike as seen before its used, 4 the key= the spike but after it enters her head. Mystery item= the hammer to drive the spike deep into her head. Mystery = why is this happening, mystery= what is next.

This movie hits me in the chest hard every time because I realize even as a man I'm just like her. Locked away in my mind fighting the demons all the time. Struggling to get free but in the end the only escape is to give in and live in my mind and not in the world so I've never felt truly apart of it and I fear I will never get to. That everyone else gets to live outside in the sun and not locked away in depths of prison but for your mind. It hits because you spend your time making yourself believe your ok and there is no prison but then you watch this and there's the truth Upper cutting you in the jaw.

@SSingh-nr8qz
A big part of the problem was the theatrical release (where most of the bad reviews come from) vs the Director's cut. Trying to keep this movie PG13 vs the serious R rating content that the director really wanted to explore (mind control, rape, etc) did this movie no help. I have to admit. When I first saw this movie in the theaters, I was disappointed. It seems over the top and made little sense. Then I watched the directors cut and understand this is a young abused woman as she goes through a lobotomy and this is her mind dying and trying to protect itself, took this story to MAJOR LEVELS above what I thought the story was about. This is one of those movies you have to watch twice to appreciate. The ending to me is finding peace before you die. To many of us die being someone else we barely recognize.

1) I would have to disagree that the way to change yourself is to change your world. The way to change your world is to change your self.2) Perhaps that's why the critics hated it, the movie is seditious and tries to coach us towards freedom, especially from critics. 3) I am subscribing to your channel since I'm always looking for movies with deeper meanings, especially if I can argue those meanings with somebody. 4) The plot of the movie, symbolism aside, is also Baby Doll achieving victory over her many tormentors even as she falls. The orderlies abandon Blue, he gets arrested for forgery and abuse, and rats out the stepfather on the way out the door. Notice they don't show her peaceful face until that happens. For herself, loss of mind and memory of the death of her sister is the best she could hope for, a perfect victory.

So I couldn’t really pay attention and enjoy the movie :/ this types of analysis help a lot! Because I feel like if I was able to watch without being distracted or just getting caught up in overstimulation through the action scenes... i would have gotten the deeper meaning of the film. At another video, where the critic liked this movie, his critique begins with, "all the confusion concerning this movie --- confuses me."
Does it tell the story perfectly? Obviously not. Or, there would be a lot less confusion...
That Blue becomes the most dramatic character, is what happens with a lot of villains. If the villain is not a full character,,, then, they are not that villainous. They are a caricature...
The Evil Cook, only needs to be The Evil Cook. Blue, NEEDS to be the driving force of negativity and impediment to the advancement of the plot...
Sweet Pea IS the main character. The story IS her story. That both she AND Baby Doll lose their little sisters, does not automatically make them the same person. But, it does equate them, in a sense...
Both of them, in their own way, will get to tell their Mother, that the missing little sister still loves her...
And, despite the fact, that Zack seems to have abandoned the possibility, a sequel is possible. With Sweet Pea and The Boy, going on missions for The Bus Driver. And, everyone who died, in the first movie, could be in the sequel...

Was thinking about this film today a little. It's the movie I lost a thousand arguments to, when I used to work in a comic store.
Without going into a lot, I understood the movie fine. Thought it concerning it seemed a lot of people I talked to couldn't quantify what made the movie good other than they were one of the people that figured it out.
I've always found big budget cinema lacking in real feminism , and instead serving up fanboy service because it seems to them to be the same thing.
I never thought this was a good movie but it's answer to that was probably better than anyone else had conceived up until that point of time.

I enjoyed this movie when it first came out, but I absolutely love it now. The older I get, the more I've been through, the more I understand. Your explanation of this movie was fantastic, thank you.

Thank you for this! It actually hit me hard, I cried mid video, maybe because I felt really sad , or that something struck inside me. I don't know how to explain it. Something about the lobotomy scene and the fact about Pain not leaving, but just staying there hidden. All in all Sucker Punch is underrated.
p.s this is my first time seeing one of your vids, i like your basses ~

I loved this analysis. I've always known this but it never really sank in, until you talked about the more feminine side of it. I don't know many people who liked this film, but majority of them who did were mostly women. The guys that didn't like it, would put it down as something that girls would enjoy because "female badassery". I don't know why, but it always bothered me when they said that. I knew this film had something more to say, but it seems that women understood it better the first round than most guys (generally speaking now, based on personal experiences and conversations). I have my own theories why, but like you said it uses hyper-femininity to tell its story and I never truly made that connection until now. Maybe now I can explain it better when talking about it next time, and with that in mind, they might look at the film in a different way.
