I bought a lightweight, folding Pistol Caliber Carbine. It came with a 17rd stick magazine. I bought 2 spare 17rd magazines to carry. I also bought a ProMag 50rd Drum, because A: it was on sale for 50% off, and B: it just looks hilarious & defeats the whole purpose of the folding compactability of this PCC to begin with. The 3 standard mags together hold 51 rounds, weigh less, and with 1 already in the grip, the 2 spares fit in one small zipper pouch. Honestly, the drum-mag is just a fun novelty, that's all.

I'm a little late to the party but I bought a nice, expensive 100 rd beta mag for deployment only to carry it a total of 1 patrol before deciding it was simply too bulky to lug around.
Комментарий от : @stryker0331

@BeachTypeZaku
They rattle when full (probably the worst part) they need another pouch specifically for them, they're heavy, and very complicated to make reliable, then reloading is more difficult.

The Russians issued 40-round box mags for the RPK for a good reason. Though they do look cool on the gun.

@durwoodrobison7800
Drums look cool. In the modern market, the only people who buy them are those who think they look cool or "More bullets=better". They don't consider carrying, a combat loadout, or the practicality of reloading when empty. "I've got 50 or 100 rounds! I'll never need to reload". They don't consider jams/malfunctions, etc.
I can buy 4 or 5 stick mags for the cost of one drum.

@1977Yakko
I remember asking a local gun store about drum mags as I was thinking about getting just one for fun. It was then I noticed they didn't even have any in stock. They bluntly told me they won't sell them because they're unreliable. I used the money I was gonna spend on just one drum mag and bought several more pmags from Magpul instead.
Комментарий от : @1977Yakko

@danieldravot4534
Drums are cool BUT they are bloody heavy and awkward on the gun. They screw up the balance and handling of every gun they will go on Carrying spares is a pain but I find they are a bigger pain when you are walking with the gun. A 75 or 100 round drum would be fine on an RPK in a defensive position where you aren't dragging the thing around. Waking patrol with one sucks. I also find the 40 and 45 round stick mags to be inconvenient as they are too long. A 30 round mag is about the right length. Recent wars have not been in serious jungles. There were no "wait a minute vines" in the sand box.

But I would take a silencer instead of the extended magazine so you can still hear music afterwards.

which box mag is best, though? For an Ak47? You guys prefer all steel or is the polymer better? Does one feed better most of the time?

Drum Vs mag is the same as mag vs clip.

You're trading more ammo in your gun for less ammo on your person.

@GMT439
Agreed they are pointless if they are not as reliable as the regular stick magazines. Which they usually are not.

@elliottmiller3282
You know its funny but this is also true for nerf, especially with regards to carrying drums. You can do it, but there is just so much more equipment and tac gear for box/stick mags than drums, so almost no one dos i. t
Комментарий от : @elliottmiller3282

@jollybucket669
I think drum magazines only make sense if the gun was in the hands of someone or something that couldn't reload, like a drone. Or something that was stationary where you could keep the drums off your person.
Комментарий от : @jollybucket669

@kevinoliver3083
Another factor is noise: Drum magazines tend to rattle when as the shooter moves.
The British found this out with tye Thompson, while patrolling during the Phoney War.

Not only did they stop buying them but, after the Battle of Britain, they shipped the drum magazines back to Auto-Ordnance to exchange for more box magazines.

Комментарий от : @kevinoliver3083

@jordangouveia1863
If the intended use of the gun is in a static position, then drums are useful. But when used for shooting and moving, box mags are the way to go.

@snapturtle3253

@sergecashman4822
I think RPK drums were extensively used by many special forces on AK 47 types of rifles. Making webbing and backpacks for drums is easy if your unit has a workshop to customize those things (mine did).

Obviously you don't need drums if you have a small belt-fed machine gun with a bag for the belt. They do make webbing pouches for those belts. That s the ideal solution for either a SAW or a GPMG. An assault rifle does not really need a drum in a regular infantry unit, but one can benefit from it in some kind of a private contractor scenario.

Комментарий от : @sergecashman4822

@clyax113
A time I can think of where drum magazines would be more effective than smaller box magazines is when money isn't an object, and you are firing from a stationary position so you can afford to reload less and don't have to carry drum magazines around. So these would be better for defensive emplacements?
Комментарий от : @clyax113

When carrying a loaded L drum it sounds like you're shaking maracas.
The C drum is just too darn heavy, but it was never intended to be carried. Early Auto Ordnance ads show a Thompson with a C drum mounted on a motorcycle sidecar.

@thedesignerblacksmith5953
I has watched this video before. The thing is, it doesn't explain why the drum mag is bad, but not the the belt-fed machine gun. Instead of you having a simple, light gun with complicated magazine, you get a heavier, shorter barrel, much more complicated machine gun. The question keeps coming back and forth for years, for example in the RPD vs RPK, or in M27 vs M249. I only get the answer recently, which is why I'm here. It doesn't has much, but still a little bit to do with tactics, as in future, we will see LMG which can use both mag and belt. The answer is still about the technical of the gun and how troops use it

I always thought it was pretty absurd in games like Bioshock where you can carry I think several hundred rounds of Thompson gun ammo that is shown on screen as drum mags, on your person simultaneous to carrying a shotgun, a grenade launcher, a Webley and spare cylinders (!), and like nine first aid kits. But then again I shouldnt be questioning a game where you shoot bees out of your hand...

In fact it bothers me more that the drums in BioShock are 44-round.

There are 50 round magazines and 50 round drums. Speed load a 50 round drum can take 30 seconds total. Load a 50 round drum takes 30 minutes. Drum coolness factor but practicality is the 50 round magazine. Don't believe me? Go Google how to load a drum magazine.

TLDR - Magazine any day over a drum. Go load a drum and tell me I'm wrong

@frankrizzo7781
There is a caveat to what you are discussing. There are now producers of reliable drum magazines and they have found their way into situational adoption. Friends of mine are working with an east African government along with it military to provide security and enforcement action around critical infrastructure. They said because the solders are fighting from a fixed position they have been using 100 round drums when engaging terrorist and criminals. They are able to engage longer without reloading. When they are forced into a dynamic role and pursue combatants they return to stick magazines. So it seen under certain circumstances you just want to use the right tool. I know fron what he said about engaging fron a vehicle they preferred using drums because of the amount of ammo expended made a difference in the tine it took them to neutralize a combatant.

You only need one (1) drum 75 rounds all additional required ammo is magazine type. Because one (1) drum will overheat the barrel when fired in rapid succession.

If you find yourself in a situation that requires more than 75 rounds fired in rapid succession you need help from others you trust. It’s a true leadership challenge when planning a mission…

I'm about ready to buy a drum magazine for my new AK-47, so I watched this video first. I understand the practicality of the box mags over the drum, and as an old soldier myself I get it. BUT, that said, the drum looks so damn cool on an AK. For range fire, it'll do just fine for me.

Update: Bought a KCI drum; all metal (I think there are some with a see-through). Loaded all 75 and took to the range with my Riley AK. Drum fit well, and I fired all rounds flawlessly. Drum did a great job. Very happy with that purchase!

Please discuss the pros and cons of drum mags vs belts on vehicle mounts (this includes tanks, ergo inclunding a certain Irish calvaryman). The topic can be segmented by mount: pintle, coax, and bog (where and when applicable).

Off topic: Then you and the Chieftain can jump on a 40mm Bofors to demonstrate how easy (or not) it is to coordinate between two people to track a moving aircraft.

@jgwilymp
In “Heckler & Koch: The official history of the Oberndorf company of Heckler & Koch” by Manfred Kersten & Walter Schmid, the following commentary is made on the G8’s optional drum magazine:

“In order to fill the magazine, the hand-wheel is slightly turned to the left against spring pressure. This moves the dummy cartridges into the magazine. Now slide the cartridges from the front all the way underneath the magazine lips. Continue turning the hand-wheel until the next cartridge can be inserted. This process is continued until the magazine is full. After approximately 20 cartridges have been fed, the cartridge column has to be pushed downwards with the next cartridge. The spring-tensioned hand-wheel must not be released or the cartridge column or dummy cartridges will jump upwards. This could cause strain on the dummy cartridge links, which might break. In general, minimum cartridge length has to be 70 mm, from which it follows that practice cartridges without dummy bullets cannot be loaded. If the hand-wheel is turned too far, the next cartridge inserted may drop between the guide tracks and move unchecked in the magazine.”
So in addition to their other drawbacks, drums are fiddly, too.
But they sure do look good.
Maybe something like SureFire’s 60- and 100-round box magazines is the way to go, or H&K’s dead sexy sci-fi 150-round linkless feed box for the HK73.

A 30rd drum magazine for a semi-automatic shotgun can be VERY useful.

I had to take a confirmed magazine that fit, cut out the part that fit, then remove the Pro-Mag 25rd (it has 3 spacers you can remove for 28 plus leave a little magazine for 2-3 more. I used regular JB Weld to attach the magazine that fits my shotty, that i sawed off to attach to the drum so it would fit. Rock and Roll-uh

nah , through updated versions over the years they’ve improved . bullet grain can be part to blame as far as being reliable in your Dmag.

problem is people buy things like this and aren’t willing to do maintenance/ make their OWN personal improvements to ensure reliability 🤷🏽‍♂️ , like buying a new handgun and expecting it to go BOOM BOOM right out the box dry no oil or butter 🤣

me personally i’ve had stock mags fail more miserably than any drum . i’ve even had QuadMags Fail , it’s all about quality control and what quality merchandise you buy. 👌🏽 happy plinking !
